Prawn cocktail triumphed over contenders like tomato soup (26%), smoked salmon (22%) and baked camembert (19%). Over half of those asked (51%) voted for a medium rare steak, beating off stiff competition from lasagne (38%), roast chicken (36%) and beer-battered fish and chips (32%).
The nation’s favourite side is chunky chips (53%), while Brits voted a creamy peppercorn sauce the number one accompaniment, according to the poll by Rodda’s Cornish clotted cream. For dessert apple crumble & custard (39%) came top, followed by ice cream (38%) and lemon cheesecake (36%).
Seventy-two percent of those polled said they often treat themselves and friends and family to a three-course dinner, with 79% saying food tastes better when enjoyed with friends and family.
