The research found that 62% of the nation preferred French fries. Crispier texture (58%), being not as greasy (32%), not going soggy like a traditional chip (24%) and being able to get more on a plate (18%) were cited as the main reasons Brits are shunning traditional chips for fries.
Over half of those surveyed (56%) said the French have better food than we do in Britain. The most popular condiment on chips was ketchup (50%), followed by curry sauce (31%) and gravy (19%).
London (67%), Leicester (52%) and Birmingham (51%) are the self-confessed chip / fry connoisseurs of the UK, while those in Norwich (26%), Cambridge (25%) and Plymouth (29%) aren’t as keen on fried spuds.
Almost two-thirds (65%) of those polled claimed they would have chips with every meal if they could, while over a third (35%) admit they always order a side of chips when out for a meal.
Steve Allen, Côte Brasserie’s executive chef, said: “It’s clear that Brits are big fans of chips whatever form they take. The crisp texture of frites pairs perfectly with a flavoursome sauce, which is often the star of the show. I’m not at all surprised about the popularity of curry sauce either."
