As a main sponsor of the NHS Sustainability Day (24th March), Quorn Foods is urging NHS Trusts to make small changes to popular menu choices in staff and visitor restaurants to realise saturated fat, calorie and carbon savings.
Tony Davison, commercial manager foodservice at Quorn Foods said: “We all have a responsibility to live more sustainably to protect the future of our planet and our health. The foodservice industry is in a strong position to make a real difference through innovative and sustainable menu development. We are committed to supporting this positive change.
“The NHS is a huge institution and a fantastic example of the potential to make a real difference. We proved last year how easy it is to provide delicious, healthier and sustainable meals by simply switching to Quorn products in popular dishes. We would like to see more NHS Trusts getting on board this year to make an even bigger impact.
The ‘Sustainable sausage swap’ and ‘Sustainability dish of the day’ activities require minimum effort to create maximum impact. Caterers simply have to switch traditional pork sausages in popular sausage dishes with Quorn sausages; or replace minced beef or chicken in menu favourites with Quorn mince or Quorn pieces.
In just two hours on the same day last year, Quorn Foods saved the NHS in each of the hospitals taking part in the activity an incredible 25,000 calories, 150kg of carbon, nearly ten tonnes of water and a significant increase in the consumption of dietary fibre.
For every Quorn dish served on NHS Sustainability Day 2016, Quorn Foods will donate 10p to Bowel Cancer UK. To participate visit www.quornfoodservice.co.uk/sustainability.
