Pupils Grab & Go to beat lunchtime queues

2nd Sep 2008 - 00:00
Abstract
As the new school term gets underway, pupils are being encouraged to stay on site at lunchtime with a new pre-order service in the school canteen.
A new 'Grab & Go' service introduced by school meal providers Manchester Fayre, has launched at North Manchester High School for Boys to help pupils beat the queues that are typical of the lunchtime rush and which are discouraging many youngsters from staying in school for a healthy meal. With the new system in place, pupils will be able to order their food in the morning, from a choice of freshly prepared and nutritionally balanced meals, so that at lunchtime they can simply 'grab and go'. Councillor Bernard Priest, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for Finance and Human Resources, who also has a responsibility for school meals said: "After speaking to teachers and pupils it was clear that some of the young people were not eating a school lunch because of the queue and so would leave the school premises to buy takeaway or, in some cases, not eat at all. We have an important responsibility to offer all pupils a healthy and nutritious meal and hope the Grab & Go system will provide an efficient solution." North Manchester High School for Boys is the first school to trial the Grab & Go service. If it proves successful, Manchester Fayre plan to roll it out to all secondary schools across the city.
