Abstract
Royal fans around the world are gearing up for one of the biggest days in the 2018 calendar, and the public sector is getting in on the action, too.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding will take place at St George's Chapel, Windsor on Saturday 19 May, with the service beginning at midday.

At 1pm, the couple will travel around Windsor in a horse-drawn carriage.

Caterers in the public sector are using the occasion as an opportunity to celebrate with a range of one-off events.

Plymouth-based co-operative trading company CATERed will be tailoring events for the schools it covers in the city. Some will be holding a picnic-style lunch, weather permitting. Others will be hosting cream tea events. Pupils will produce pictures, banners and flags to mark the occasion.

Some of the schools with high levels of FSM will be served a hot, freshly prepared two-course meal on the day, as well as a dessert and drink in a Union Jack box.

CATERed will tweet images of the celebrations on the day.

Bateaux Windsor is extending its schedule on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 May.

On an extended one-and-a-half hour cruise on its vessel, guests can enjoy a full English afternoon tea or a dinner cruise past Windsor Castle, Eton College, Windsor Racecourse, Romney Lock and many other heritage sites.

Attendees will be served a traditional British tea and cakes. Those opting for a two-and-a-half-hour evening cruise will enjoy a five-course meal.

Bateaux Windsor’s head chef, Joanna Bell, said: “The atmosphere will be fantastic – and along with a superb vantage point, we’ll be serving lots of wine and Champagne to toast Harry and Meghan.”

Most of the 16 old peoples homes under Hampshire County Council will be running afternoon tea parties to celebrate the marriage. There will also be an inter-unit wedding cake competition, to be judged on May 18.

A number of activities have been suggested for Prime Life care homes within its monthly events calendar, such as: make your own fascinator; decorate your home in red, white and blue; send residents a handwritten invitation to ‘attend’ the wedding; afternoon tea; and putting up wedding memorabilia to remind residents and staff of their own weddings. There will also be a company-wide competition for the best Royal Wedding Street Party. Most Prime Life homes are hosting parties, with some raising money for dementia charities.

The Gracewell of Frome care home will celebrate with a street party within its communities. The wedding will be broadcast, with hot and cold food available from all over the commonwealth, and nods to food from previous celebrations, such as coronations and jubilees. The care home’s head chef said: “Having cooked for Prince Harry early on in his training in the armed forces, I feel passionate about producing and celebrating the royal wedding with my residents.”

Additionally, Brighterkind’s UK-wide care homes and Belong Crewe care village, in Cheshire, will be showing live coverage of the big day with accompanying food and drink-related events.
