Abstract
Andy Jones, the Public Sector Catering 100 (PSC100) chair has said that ‘food is the key patient care’ in a blog on Labour List.

Commissioned by Jon Ashworth, Labour’s shadow secretary of state for health, he said that hospital caterers are being asked to do more for less.

He said: “With the funding issues in the NHS driven by austerity, budgets are always being reviewed and cost improvement programmes (CIP) applies, it is often the facilities budgets – such as catering – that are hit hardest. At a time when food is integral, we are being asked to do more for less.”

He adds that it’s at ward service where the service is most critical and that staff must be trained in communication, food presentation, waste control, basic dietary requirements and allergens for the best results.
