Abstract
New NHS data, analysed by analytics company EXASOL, has revealed that the number of type 2 diabetes prescriptions have risen by one third in five years.
The number of prescriptions for type 2 diabetes, which is associated with obesity, have risen from 26 million prescriptions in 2011 to 35 million in 2015.
In the first six months of 2016 the number of prescriptions of type 2 diabetes medications was already up by more than 8% compared to the same period the year before, according to EXASOL.
The analysis also found large variations in prescribing across England with the London borough of Newham having the highest prescription rate in the country, over double the national average.
The ten highest prescribing districts for type 2 diabetes are:

- East Lindsey
- South Holland
- Tower Hamlets
- Tendring
- Nuneaton and Bedworth
- Harrow
- North Warwickshire
- Oldham
- Sunderland
