Phil Shelley encourages hospital caterers to enter Public Sector Catering Awards
Abstract
Phil Shelley, who chaired of the Hospital Food Review and heads Net Zero initiatives at NHS England, has encouraged individuals, teams and organisations to enter the Public Sector Catering Awards.

The Public Sector Catering Awards aim to celebrate the achievements of people who operate within a public sector catering environment including contract caterers. Nominations will close on Friday 31st January 2025.

Commenting on the Awards, Shelley said: “There is no greater acknowledgement, than to be nominated by your peers for an industry award. Public Sector Catering has long been, and continues to be, at the core of positive decision making and campaigning across all of our businesses. 

“We are all working with colleagues that inspire and instigate constructive change within our catering teams – use this opportunity to nominate them, for an appropriate award. Take that step!”

Judges are looking for those who have overcome operational challenges, innovated with ingredients and menus, achieved training success for team members, sought feedback on the food served and responded.

All catering professionals and teams working in establishments within the National Health Service are eligible for the Hospital Catering Award whether they work for an outsourced organisation or an in-house operation.

The award will be presented to the individual, team or organisation that has best demonstrated an improvement in patient, staff and visitor meal provision or in one of these areas in particular.

Innovation in managing waste, improving service levels and the patient/customer experience will all be regarded as significant factors. Judges are looking for entries of 500 to 1,000 words and supporting evidence of:

  • Meeting the challenge of malnutrition and dehydration
  • Innovation in menus and meal delivery
  • A patient centric strategy

Other relevant award to hospital caterers include: Care Catering Award; Catering Manager of the Year Award; Chef of the Year Award; Health and Nutrition Award; Innovation Award; Marketing Award; Special Contribution Award; Sustainability Award; Team of the Year Award; Training and Apprenticeship Award and Unsung Hero Award.
