Parent hand delivers bananas to school

20th Apr 2009 - 00:00
Abstract
A concerned father-of-two has begun delivering bananas to pupils at schools in Wigan after they were removed from the menu.
Gary Wilkes claimed that some pupils are being 'deprived of their favourite foods' including bananas and red peppers. But Wigan Council's school catering team, MetroFresh defended its decision to remove the items temporarily by telling the BBC: "The red peppers are between seasons at the moment and the bananas are expensive because they are in short supply. MetroFresh, our supplier, has won awards for the healthy food it supplies children and we always strive to produce healthy, nutritionally balanced meals." Mr Wilkes said: "I don't think bananas are expensive, in fact I would say bananas are some of the cheapest fruits."
