Online national food strategy for England conference set for 7 July

An online conference timed to follow the interim National Food Strategy for England will discuss look at the priorities for developing it ahead of final publication in the autumn.

It is set for July 7th and includes a number of high-profile speakers, including Emily Miles, chief executive of the Food Standards Agency, Stefano Agostini, chief executive of Nestlé UK&I; Minette Batters, president of the National Farmers Union; Sue Davies of Which?; Professor Tim Lang of City University of London; Tanya Steele from WWF; Alison Tedstone of Public Health England; and Ian Wright, chief executive of the Food and Drink Federation.

It will be chaired by Baroness McIntosh of Pickering, a member of the EU Energy and Environment Sub-Committee, and Baroness Kate Parminter, a member of the Lords Select Food, Poverty, Health and Environment Committee.

The agenda will look at the following issues:

•    Stakeholder perspectives on the development of an overarching food strategy
•    What makes a good food system
•    Maintaining a competitive and secure food manufacturing industry
•    Agricultural standards and our food values
•    Priorities for the retail sector: ensuring value for suppliers, customers and driving behaviour changes
•    Providing a sustainable and healthy National Food Strategy
•    Improving healthy choices within the food industry
•    A business perspective on the future of the food system and the National Food Strategy
•    Working with the natural environment to deliver a sustainable strategy
•    Consumer priorities for a food strategy
•    Engaging with children, families and those with less access to fresh and affordable food.

It is a four-hour programme, with breaks, with speakers presenting via webcam and using the Cisco WebEx online conference platform.
