One in 10 Brits opt for soya milk

11th Feb 2009 - 00:00
Abstract
More than one in 10 Britons is now choosing soya milk alternative, reflecting the nation's increasing awareness of the need for a healthier diet.
More are expected to join their ranks following new concerns from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) over full fat milk. Almost 10 million of us – or 15% – are now regularly reaping the benefits of drinking soya milk alternative, which is proven to help lower cholesterol levels. Alpro dietician Kate Arthur says: "Around 10 million people in the UK have already discovered the benefits of soya milk alternative. The traditional view is that soya milk alternative is only for those who are intolerant to dairy but only around one in 10 people drink it for that reason. Nearly four times as many of us are now drinking it than just 10 years ago." The FSA this week raised its concerns over full-fat milk as part of a campaign aimed at parents to drive a fundamental shift away from saturated fat. In particular, the FSA wants the nation to eat less cheese, butter, cream, pies, cakes, red meat, sausages, burgers and pate. Kate adds: "Heart disease is one of the biggest killers in Britain. That is why millions of us are already changing the way we eat and are choosing healthier low saturated fat alternatives, such as milk, yogurts and other soya alternatives."
