Cod takes third place with 0.26kg of CO2 per serving
Abstract
To celebrate National Fish & Chip Day (6th June), Nutritics put the nation’s most popular choices of fish to the test to find out which came out on top when it comes to sustainability.

Fish & chips is an iconic British comfort dish that continues to satisfy diners across generations, with 382 million portions eaten every year and cod making up 60% of these – making it officially the UK’s favourite.

Nutritics is food service technology company that helps hospitality businesses measure, report and share their carbon footprint and water usage scores. The most sustainable fish are:

  1. Hake came out on top, using 0.22kg of CO2 per serving
  2. Pollock was a close second with 0.24kg of CO2 per serving
  3. Cod takes third place with 0.26kg of CO2 per serving
  4. Haddock was fourth, with 0.38kg of CO2 per serving
  5. Skate and plaice took joint fifth place, both using 0.80 kg of CO2 per serving
