Notts school wins brain food challenge

8th Nov 2007 - 00:00
Abstract
Three bright sparks from a Nottingham school have scooped first place and two runner-up positions in a national schools promotion by Quorn.
Called the Brighter Future Memory Challenge, it attracted entries from students across more than 170 secondary schools nationwide. Overall winner Luke Hickling won an iBook G4 laptop, while two fellow pupils Josh Hickling and Cameron Cross each won an iPod nano. As a result of its successful participation in the promotion Kimberley School has won a Solardome classroom – a geodesic dome that captures sunlight to create a light and warm environment for study. The catering team at the school will also get a food preparation and knife skills demonstration from Brian Baker, a Quorn home economist and the Marlow foods executive chef, whose clients in the past have included Sir Elton John and fashion designer Valentino. They will also receive a professional knife set. Entry into the competition was simple: Quorn dishes, which are made from mycoprotein, had to be included on the menu for the school to qualify, and participation was highlighted in the dining area by posters and tent cards. Every time a student ordered a Quorn meal, they automatically received a leaflet with a unique code, which allowed them access and enter the Quorn Brighter Future Memory Challenge via the website www.quorn-iq.com. School head Chris Teal said: "Luke, Josh and Cameron's tremendous achievement mirrors the philosophy across the whole school that children do their best and are rewarded for achievement. "The school will benefit from much needed space from the Solardome and the innovative, technological structure will complement the school's image as a forward looking technology school." Tony Davison, commercial manager foodservice, Marlow Foods, who presented the prizes said: "The Look Forward to a Brighter Future with Quorn promotion was a great way to engage secondary school students on the importance of healthy eating, rather than just telling them that they have to do it. "The response was fantastic and the scores incredibly high. Luke, Josh and Cameron have done exceptionally well and we are thrilled that they will enjoy their personal prizes and that the school will also benefit from the Solardome and the training for the school cooks, for many years to come."
