Abstract
The NHS chief executive, Simon Stevens has revealed that gluten-free foods, which he said could be bought cheaply in supermarkets, will no longer be available on the NHS.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Stevens revealed the reforms were part of an attempt to save the NHS up to £1 billion in two years. The Daily Mail reports that cutting gluten-free food will create savings of £22 million per year for the NHS.
Stevens said there is no longer a need for NHS prescriptions and claimed it is wrong for patients to be prescribed gluten-free items such as pizza bases, digestive biscuits and cakes.
The NHS chief executive also suggested that parents could help tackle childhood obesity by substituting chocolate or cereal bars when children get home from school with carrots and apples.
