Abstract
A nationwide survey has found a resounding 87% of Britons say that, despite everything that is happening, they feel proud to be British. And, unsurprisingly, the National Health Service topped the list, with 71%.

But of the 50-strong list of reasons people gave for feeling good about the UK, 11 are food and drink items, including fish and chips, which came in second place (58%) and the full English breakfast in third spot (52%).

Roast beef and the good old cuppa made 7th and 8th places respectively, both voted for by 42%.

They narrowly trailed behind the Queen, who came in fourth place with 48%, while the British countryside and Big Ben both stir our national pride on 44%.

Outside of the top ten, cream teas, Victoria sponge cake and pie and mash claimed 17th, 18th and 20th places – all on 27%.

The other foods claiming a slice of the nation’s love were Cornish pasties, chicken tikka massala, marmite, and marmalade.

The nation’s PE teacher, Joe Wicks, who has kept the nation on their toes with his daily online work outs also made the list, with 22% of the vote, as did the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak (20%).

The survey of 2,000 British adults was commissioned by online polling firm, Perspectus Global.

Head of research, David Arnold said: “We were delighted, but not surprised to see the heroes of the NHS being recognised for the incredible work they do and are doing at the moment.

“It was also interested to see how many of our favourite foods came high in the list, perhaps showing how our favourite meals are getting us through the current lockdown.”
