Abstract
Consuming 3.6 million bagels for breakfast and lunch out-of-home each month, it’s safe to say that Brits have a well-deserved love for the doughy treat. To help operators make the most of National Bagel Day next month (9 February), New York Bakery Co. is releasing a new guide filled with recipes, tips and insight.

Designed for operators to “make the most of the ‘bagel boom’ and tap into the increasing demand for (the dish) in the out-of-home market,” the guide (launching 9 February) is inspired by the “big” food trends of 2018 and includes both American and Middle Eastern inspired recipes as well as a number of vegetarian and vegan options, such as vegan falafel with beetroot and carrot slaw.

Marketing manager for out-of-home at New York Bakery Co, Philippa Knight, said: “It’s no secret that consumers are moving away from traditional breads to more premium and specialty alternatives. Not only this, but the demand for American-inspired dishes shows no sign of slowing down.

“Both of these trends have been big factors in the ‘bagel boom’ and have helped to make bagels a must have item on menus.

“Each recipe in the guide has been developed with the latest food trends in mind, to suit a range of eating occasions throughout the day – bagels aren’t just for breakfast!

“While cream cheese is always going to be a popular topping, the guide helps operators to create a bagel offering that stands out from the competition. The Lebanese chicken bagel, for example, combines Middle Eastern ingredients that a lot of consumers will be familiar with, like hummus, alongside more unusual up-and-coming flavours such as zaatar and sumac.”

The guide will be available to download via https://www.newyorkbakeryco.com/ on National Bagel Day (9 February).
