New DVD for Welsh kids about where bacon comes from

6th May 2008 - 00:00
Abstract
Primary schools across Wales will be watching a new DVD this week to educate them about farming and where food is sourced from.
For many children in Wales and other parts of the world, they are unaware of how food is produced. They also know very little about the countryside, healthy eating and the environment. According to one national poll, 1 in 10 year-olds didn't know that pork chops came from pigs, and 18% had no idea of the ingredients of yoghurt. Further research found that city children believed that bacon comes from sheep and cows lay eggs. Some 22% of adults didn't believe sausages and bacon started life on UK farms, and 47% were unaware that British farmers produce the oats and milk. The Learning on the Farm project, part funded by the Soil Association, The Waterloo Fund and the Countryside Council for Wales, hopes to educate children by taking them to farms, getting them involved with gardening projects and teaching them how to cook raw ingredients.
