Abstract
National Meals on Wheels Week is fast approaching (5-9 November), with organiser the National Association of Care Catering (NACC) calling on government to “make it a statutory protected service for those most at risk.”

Celebrated for over 15 years, the annual event aims to raise awareness of the Meals on Wheels services – be it delivered at home or via day centres/ lunch clubs.

With NACC members supporting the scheme all yearlong, the dedicated week seeks to:

  • Highlight the social, economical, psychological and preventative benefits of meals on wheels services in UK
  • Promote and urge the general pubic to support the services
  • Increase awareness of loneliness, social isolation and safety in the community

It also calls on government to recognise the ‘real value’ of schemes such as Meals on Wheels:

  • NACC is asking government to consider making Meals on Wheels a statutory protected service for those considered most at risk in the community, to ensure greater provision across England, Scotland and Wales
  • Calling on government and councils to recognise the value of adult social care services, such as meals on wheels
  • Calling for safeguarding of existing Meals on Wheels services to ensure that older and vulnerable people have access to nutritious meals delivered to the home

To get involved, join the conversation on social media by using the hashtag #mealsonwheels and sharing what you are doing for Meals on Wheels Week.
