The children, part of the school’s Let’s Get Cooking Club, had the chance to show off their skills to the chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on School Food and MP for Washington and Sunderland West.
Sharon Hodgson MP, said: “It’s been wonderful to see Let’s Get Cooking in action today.
“Cooking skills are the gateway to a healthier diet for life, so we need many more opportunities like this to give every child every chance to learn to cook.”
The club, part of the Children’s Food Trust’s national network of Let’s Get Cooking clubs supported by The Tesco Eat Happy Project, is one of more than 2,400 schools in England building children’s skills, confidence and knowledge in the kitchen this year.
St Matthew’s Primary’s Let’s Get Cooking club coordinator, Sinead Longster, said: “The children were really excited to be cooking for Sharon – you can see the pride on their faces when they complete a new dish and watch someone taste it.
“Cooking is an incredible way to get children communicating, build their self-esteem and confidence and to give them skills which will stay with them for life.”
