Abstract
M&J Seafood, part of the Sysco Specialty Group, has updated its information for chefs and caterers so that they know which seafood is currently rated five (fish to avoid) by the Marine Conservation Society.

The updated list, which can be found here, includes Wild Atlantic Salmon, Blue Marlin, Pacific and Southern Blue Fin tuna, Orange Roughy, Wild Atlantic Halibut, Parrotfish, Starry Smooth-hound, Shark, Wild Sturgeon, Yellow Gurnard and Skate.

Sarah Phillips, senior category manager at M&J Seafood, said: “We know that keeping on top of what is under threat, and what isn’t, can be confusing for caterers, which is why as soon as we are made aware that a species is rated five, we let our customers know, and stop selling it immediately.

“It’s also why we have created our ‘Simply Sustainable List’. The list, is a regularly updated record of over 300 fish and seafood products that are rated one to three by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) or certified sustainable to the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Aquaculture Stewardship Council's (ASC) environmental standard.

“Purchasing fish and seafood on the ‘Simply Sustainable List’ will also make it easier for restaurants to become members of the Sustainable Restaurant Association and the Sustainable Fish Cities scheme, both of which prove to consumers that a restaurant is buying sustainably.”

A focus on provenance enabled M&J Seafood to walk away with the Marine Stewardship Council Wholesaler of the Year award.
