On 2 May 2020 Partridges of Sloane Square will host the annual Chelsea Bun Awards. There will be a fine food market on the Kings Road in Chelsea to raise money for The Children’s Surgery Foundation to help children at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital.
Chelsea Buns are a type of currant bun made from yeast dough and flavoured with lemon peel, cinnamon or mixed spice.
Bakers of all ages and skill levels can enter one of the five categories:
- Junior Bakers (12 & under) £2 to enter.
- Young Bake-Off Wannabes (age 25 & under) £5 to enter.
- Have-a-Go Grown-ups - £10 to enter.
- Business & Professional Bakers - £25 to enter.
- Over 65’s – Free to enter.
The judging panel includes michelin star chef Howard, a Chelsea pensioner Hélèna Frost and John Sheppard owner of Partridges. The buns will be judged on their taste, flavour, creativity and presentation.
Sheppard said: “The first Chelsea Bun was created around 1700 by Richard Hand close to Partridges store in Duke of York Square, Chelsea. Richard, known as Captain Bun, ran The Old Chelsea Bun House, which was famous for its Chelsea Buns and counted King George II, King George III and their families amongst its customers.
“We are delighted to hold the World Chelsea Bun Awards for the second year running and hope they will revive the baking of Chelsea Buns in the area and help raise funds and for The Children’s Surgery Foundation Charity.”
The five winners from each category will win a Partridges certificate, Partridges Chelsea flower collection gift hamper and £100 gift vouchers from charity partner Merci Maman.
