Abstract
Westminster Insight is holding its latest Mental Health in Schools Conference this autumn (16 October), with guest speakers providing insight into how schools can collaborate with the NHS, voluntary sector and local authorities.

It follows proposed changes to the way children and young people’s mental health is managed in schools, as outlined in the Government’s green paper: ‘Transforming Children and Young People's Mental Health Provision.’

With a number of expert speakers signed up, these include: Caroline Hounsell

(MHFA England); Jenny Barksfield (PSHE Association); Anita Cleare (The Positive Parenting Project) and Dean Johnstone, chief executive of Minds Ahead, who will also be running the conference.

Throughout the day, attendees will learn about a wide range of topics from implementing different models of mental health provision in schools to overcoming stigma by teaching pupils, staff and parents about mental health awareness.

Other topics include:

  • Latest policy developments and funding
  • Practical advice on implementing a whole-school mental health strategy
  • Ensure staff are fully trained to recognise early warning signs and are comfortable talking about mental health
  • Successful case studies
  • PSHE lesson plans and guidance
  • Engaging with parents to discuss their children’s mental health
  • Listen to a young person’s opinion about what works in schools
  • Understand the negative effects of social media on mental health and understand the role the school can play in alleviating the impact
