Abstract
Talkington Bates has enjoyed a successful start to 2012, by scooping industry awards and establishing a new division offering a bespoke service and quality delivery to its growing number of care sites.

Paul Bates, Talkington Bates group managing director, said: “It has been a momentous – and busy – period for the company and a time when we have made progress in so many areas.

“Our progress during the first half of 2012 means we are well placed to face the many issues the economic downturn is generating for contract catering and we are positive that we can continue to make progress in the coming months.”

Over the course of the first half of the year, Talkington Bates has chalked up a series of achievements. It won the ‘Workplace Sandwich Provider of the Year’ award at the recent “Sammies” in recognition of its innovative offering.

The judges said the company had brought innovation to the sector by introducing 100% recyclable, biodegradable and compostable “stacker” sandwich boxes, suitable for all types of sandwiches including bagels, baguettes and toasties.

The quality of the contract caterer’s approach was highlighted again when Fiona Hopkinson received the ‘Social Care Award’ in the annual awards run by Cost Sector Catering magazine.

More recently, the company was a finalist in the ‘Best Use of Technology’ category at the annual Cateys Awards for its internet-based, live accountancy system.

In addition, in June Talkington Bates set up a division that will spearhead the development of its expanding extra and residential care business – Talkington Bates Care Division, headed up by Fiona Hopkinson, managing director, Talkington Bates Midlands & Care.

Bates added: “The company’s innovative approach to its growing care market business has paid dividends in recent years. Since starting the Midlands operation, Fiona has built up the care market business to account for around 30% of the group’s overall turnover.”
