Abstract
Lorry drivers are increasingly frustrated by the lack of healthy-eating options at Britain’s roadside cafés, according to a new survey.

An RAC survey found four in 10 HGV drivers now crave healthier, low-fat or sugar-free food, including salads and falafels, when driving.

Chris Rampley of the Road Haulage Association, told The Guardian: “There’s probably not enough choice at the moment. The majority of the big three – Moto, RoadChef and Welcome Break – tend to have franchise deals so you’ve got your McDonald’s, Burger King, fast-food outlets. Some drivers like that but the choice is not as great as it could be.”

However, a Welcome Break spokesperson told Cost Sector Catering: "Welcome Break do have both Burger King and KFC at our sites, which are popular with a wide range of customers.  These brands also have healthy choices on the menu too.

“However, the choice at Welcome Break extends far beyond that, with a range of other food options. These include Tossed, which serves salads, wraps and soups using fresh, seasonal ingredients, our Waitrose stores with a wide range of sushi, sandwiches and other healthy options, plus the soon to be opening Pret A Manger.

“We are continually looking at other food options to bring to our service stations in order to offer our customers the best choice and selection on the motorway network.”

A further piece of research by travel watchdog Transport Focus found that the basic needs of truck drivers, including healthy food options, were not being met. The group is now calling for improved roadside facilities.
