Abstract
Pupils at Longmoor Primary School are being encouraged to grow and eat healthy food and work alongside older people as part of Derbyshire County Council's £510,000 'Growing Better Together' project.
Schools and children's centres across Derbyshire have received funding, with grants of up to a maximum of £10,000 available. Longmoor Primary School, Newstead Road, Long Eaton, received £6,500 to create an allotment for use by pupils and members of the community. Councillor Mike Longden, Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Education, officially opened the allotment. Longden said: "I'm really impressed with the work children at Longmoor Primary School have done. "This is a fabulous way of getting youngsters working and learning outdoors alongside parents and older members of the community to grow and find out more about healthy food." Long Eaton Allotment Association members have worked alongside children during their lessons and they take home some of the produce grown. Sally Buczkiewicz, Longmoor Primary School headteacher, concluded: "The allotment is a massive learning resource for the children and will be for generations to come."
