Locally grown produce 'might benefit hospital food'

12th Jan 2010 - 00:00
Abstract
The adoption of healthier food which is grown in an organic manner might prove beneficial to the country's hospitals, it is believed.
According to Emma Hockridge, a spokesperson for the Soil Association, healthy produce that is sourced from the local area could be an option for such organisations. She commented: "Public institutions such as hospitals could benefit from healthy, local, organically grown food from their own doorstep." Meanwhile, in a development that might interest education institutes looking to offer their students healthy contract catering services, Ms Hockridge believes that schools might also be able to focus more on sustainability by opting to grow their own nutritious produce. The comments made by Ms Hockridge follow proposals outlined in the government's recent Food 2030 strategy. It makes the recommendation that the existing Growing Schools Programme should be extended in the future, to provide youngsters with further food growing opportunities.
