Abstract
The pupils of a London school were treated to a masterclass in healthy Chinese cookery last week, as Charlie Lee, the chairman of Lee Kum Kee Sauce Group, made a rare UK visit.

The chairman has created a new schools’ programme called Fun :) Healthy Chinese Cuisine Ambassadors, in response to the new GCSE for Food Preparation & Nutrition now being taught in schools.

The pupils and teachers of St Michael’s Catholic College in Bermondsey were joined by Lee, Jeremy Pang of the School of Wok and a number of Lee Kum Kee experts taught a masterclass in Chinese cuisine and how to create healthy dishes easily.

Maria Chong, managing director of Lee Kum Kee Europe, said: “Spreading the art and benefits of quality Chinese cuisine and culinary skills is central to our mission to promote high quality Chinese food culture around the world.

“Chinese cuisine has always been a popular choice in Britain because it’s considered to be tasty, nutritious and healthy.  This project is driven by our passion to promote healthy and nutritious eating, home cooked food, and everyday cooking. We believe teaching and learning cooking skills should start early as an essential life skill and to help improve everyone’s quality of life.”

The interactive cookery experience ended in a “Masterchef” style cook off and tasting to find out which group of students, aged 13 to 14, had cooked and served the best black bean dish.

The inaugural phase of Healthy Chinese Cuisine Ambassadors, created in association with the Ming-Ai (London) Institute, reached 70 British schools, sharing the art of healthy Chinese cooking with more than 1,000 students and teachers.

A new five year scheme which is engaging with a further 280 schools and facilitating around 40 teacher training workshops has also been launched.
