Kids grow own produce for school dinners

9th Jul 2008 - 00:00
Abstract
Children from Herrick Primary School will be growing a selection of fruit and vegetables on Friday (11 July) to harvest the first crop – ready to include in their school dinners.
Leicester City Council's City Catering has been working with the primary school to highlight the type of fresh produce that can be included in school dinners. The pupils will be growing a selection of strawberries, radishes, potatoes and onions. Around 20 children have dedicated two hours per week to working in the school garden and tending to their produce. Cllr Vi Dempster, cabinet lead for children and young people's services, commented: "By being involved in growing food children gain a better understanding of where their food comes from and learn more about healthy eating." In October last year, City Catering re-launched school dinners in Leicester, offering a new menu featuring a range of healthy, nutritious dishes. The menu changes each term to offer children variety. Herrick Primary School works closely with Groundwork Leicester and Leicestershire on a range of environmental activities including composting and recycling.
