Abstract
People 1st, the hospitality workforce charity, has claimed in its latest research report that the hospitality industry’s need for more skilled managers is greater than ever.

The range of skills and attributes demanded of hospitality managers is expanding, regardless of whether they work for a chain or independent business. People 1st reports that by 2022, the sector needs an additional 66,000 managers.

Figures suggest that 6% of hospitality and tourism businesses have vacancies, a figure that is in line with the economy as a whole. However, 42% are considered hard to fill, a figure that is much higher than the 33% for the UK as a whole.

The research suggests that the reasons for the gap in management skills is because 55% of managers are new to the role and have not fully completed training. 32% said that training had not resulted in performance improvements and 36% of employers reported that managed lack motivation.

People 1st is a skills and workforce development charity for employers in the hospitality industry.
