Abstract
The hospitality industry has been well represented in this year's 'The Sunday Times Best Companies to Work For' list, which aims to reward and recognise the UK firms that engage and motivate their staff.
The Sunday Times 'Top 20 Big Companies to Work For', which was published yesterday (8 March), saw Bourne Leisure (2nd), Marriott Hotels International (4th) and 3663 First for Foodservice (20th) all make the cut. Bourne Leisure leapt 13 places to 2nd position with the Sunday Times saying: "Workers have more fun with colleagues than staff at any other firm on the list…they believe they can make a valuable contribution to the success of the organisation and are excited by where it is going." The company which operates Haven Holidays, Butlins and Warner Leisure Hotels was also commended for helping its employees achieve a happy work/life balance. Five-star treatment of its staff helped Marriott Hotels achieve 4th place on the list. "Rewards for outstanding contribution and long service, plus an annual staff appreciation week and quarterly social activities reinforce the value Marriott places on its people. In the year to August 2008 the firm spent £355,000 on fun events for employees," read the profile. 3663 First for Foodservice rounded off the Top 20 and also came top in the 'How green is my company?' poll. "Holiday voucher prizes go to people who come up with good ideas, while employee of the month get a £50 prize and there are loyalty awards for long service. One of the most sought-after rewards is the chairman's award given for exceptional performance, which wins 30 employees and their partners a trip to Johannesburg." 'The Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For' list saw Kellogg's (30th), Inventive Leisure (49th), Botanic Inns (66th) and Diageo Scotland (97th) all recognised for valuing their employees.
