Hospital food waste investigated by BBC

9th Oct 2008 - 00:00
Abstract
Around £400,000 of food went to waste at NHS Hospitals in Devon according to a BBC investigation.
£172,000-worth of food was thrown out at Exeter's Royal Devon and Exeter during 2006, which was 14% of the meals provided. Last year saw the introduction of a new catering system where meals are supplied frozen and then distributed from the kitchen. Reports on the BBC highlight that the freedom of information request refers to meals that were unused and the figures do not include plate waste. Associate catering manager for the hospital, Martin Armstrong told the BBC that they always look to reduce food waste wherever possible: "I want to get down to about 10% and I do think that's possible. We've got to look at how we communicate and how we operate our systems here."
