Abstract
The chefs and catering team at BMI Chelsfield Park Hospital, in Orpington, have been awarded the maximum five-star rating for their catering and food safety management from Bromley Council’s Environmental Health Department.
The team was led by head chef Stephen Milton - a finalist in the 2009 BBC show 'The Restaurant' – and received the rating after a lengthy review by the council earlier this month. Up for inspection during the review were the hospital's facilities, the catering team's working practices and their standard of compliance with food safety legislation. The Food Standards Agency's, 'Scores on the Doors', system shows how well food businesses meet current food legislation. Under the scheme, any business selling food is given a 'star' rating, between zero and five to show how well they comply with food safety standards. After the result was announced Ruth Hoadley, executive director of Chelsfield Park Hospital, said: "At BMI Chelsfield Park Hospital it's important that we make our patients, visitors and staff as comfortable as possible during their stay. "That is why we ensure that all departments deliver and exceed even the highest of standards of inspection. Our chefs and catering team are exceptional in what they do and offer meals that both taste good, are nutritionally balanced and are prepared in the cleanest environment possible. "It is this attention to detail and quality that is important, particular to our patients who are unwell. "With Stephen and his team at the helm we are confident that the highest standards are constantly met and exceeded and I would challenge you to find a better tasting macaroni cheese anywhere else in Bromley, or the UK." Milton appeared on The Restaurant with his wife Rebecca in 2008, making it to the final but ultimately missing out on the opportunity to open a restaurant with the host Raymond Blanc. He said: "This is a fantastic achievement for the team and really shows off our dedication to our patients, staff and visitors who use the hospital's restaurant and catering everyday. "Hospital food can have a bad reputation but here at BMI Chelsfield Park Hospital we are bucking the trend and proving that hospital food can be exciting and tasty. "It is the freedom that Ruth gives us that allows us to fuel our passion for food and on behalf of everyone at the hospital I would like to thank my entire team for their dedication, hard work and professionalism. We will continue to strive for improvements and will be aiming for a Michelin star next."
