High fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) conference to take place in Westminster
Abstract
On the 10 October 2019 the HFSS conference will take place at the Westminster Food and Nutrition Forum to discuss priorities for meeting targets, reformulation and regulating the food environment.

The keynote speaker at the HFSS conference is Vicki Coulton who will discuss the next steps for high fat, sugar and salt policy in the UK. Other speakers include Magnus Brooke, Dean Hochlaf and James Lowman.

Sessions will look at the practical challenges of product reformulation including reducing HFSS content in products whilst engaging with consumers and overcoming the cost barriers.

Further sessions will explore local initiatives for increasing community awareness of HFSS, including case studies from those who have developed healthy eating partnerships and strategies. Delegates will also discuss options and the possible scope of further government intervention.

Sally Davies, chief medical officer for England, was asked to review what more is required to meet the government’s target of halving child obesity by 2030. There have been calls for further government regulation on HFSS and ultra-processed food products after the success of the tax on sugary drinks.

There will also be a discussion on London’s Food Strategy that is planning to ban junk food advertisements on public transport.

The HFSS conference will present an opportunity to engage with key policymakers and other interested parties. Representatives from Just Eat, Obesity Health Alliance and Ashbury Labelling will be attending.
