Have your say on compulsory cookery classes for pupils

31st Jan 2008 - 00:00
Abstract
Ed Balls, the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, is asking the public to suggest which dishes pupils should learn to cook.
Currently 85% of secondary schools offer food technology lessons. From September, every 11-14 year old pupil within these schools will have practical 'hands on' cooking lessons, learning to make cheap, healthy dishes from simple, fresh ingredients. Pupils will learn to cook a variety of dishes, including the 'top eight', suggested by the public. People can submit their suggestions by emailing supporters of the scheme, Let's Get Cooking, at getcooking.consultation@dcsf.gov.uk David Edwards, director of Let's Get Cooking commented on their involvement in the scheme, "We are very supportive of this new initiative, giving 11-14 year olds the opportunity to learn an essential life skill and make simple, healthy dishes 'from scratch'. Let's Get Cooking will complement this by providing various opportunities for children, young people and their parents to learn and develop cooking skills in a fun environment."
