Abstract
Sugar Smart Greenwich, a new initiative in the London borough, is calling on local institutions to promote healthier, lower sugar alternatives in the fight against childhood obesity.
The initiative has been launched today as new data show that over 40% of Year 6 children are overweight in Greenwich.
So far over 15 local organisations have pledged support, including Charlton Athletic FC, four local primary schools, and local caterer GSPlus.
Cabinet member for health and adult social care, Councillor David Gardner, said: “We know sugar is a leading cause of childhood obesity, and the Sugar Smart Greenwich programme will help us to create a healthier environment for people here in Greenwich. Together with Lewisham, we are leading the way and many other boroughs are keen to follow suit.”
The scheme has already been rolled out in Brighton, and Greenwich and Lewisham are the first London boroughs to go Sugar Smart.
