Abstract
The clocks have been safely put back an hour and we should be readying ourselves for the traditional autumn events of Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night – pumpkin lanterns, bonfires and fireworks. However, a certain virus is forcing most of us to change plans.
Some things, though, do not change and we’ve got our regular helping of food facts for you:
• Capsaicin, an active compound found in chilli peppers, may burn and irritate the flesh of animals but birds are immune to its effects
• Lloyd Groff Copeman invented the first rubber ice cube tray in 1933
• Windsor Red cheese gets its colour and flavour from the tomato that is added
• The premium West End food shop Fortnum & Mason claims to have invented the Scotch egg in 1738
• To turn a plain martini into a dirty martini, simply add a little of the olive juice as well as an olive
