Abstract
In the week the nation’s hairdressers and barbers opened again for business after being shut for more than three months, we bring you some hair-raising food facts.

* Some food manufacturers use L-cysteine, an amino acid in keratin, which they extract from human hair. It is used to stabilise dough and perk up the taste buds that detect salty, savoury flavours.

* Opera star Luciano Pavarotti, well known for his role as Figaro in The Barber of Seville, insisted in his contract on access to fresh food 24-hours a day on tour, including roast chicken, pasta and tomatoes.

* Nutritionists recommend eggs as the best food for good hair – they contain biotin, a mineral they say helps its growth

* Sweeney Todd, the demon barber of Fleet Street, whose victims were turned into pies, was not real but a fictional character from a Victoria-era ‘penny dreadful’ story.

* Apple cider vinegar can be used to wash your hair because it can help to bring your scalp to the ideal acidity level while regular shampoo actually disrupts its natural pH balance.
