Abstract
To celebrate Pepperoni Pizza Day (Friday 20th September) we have found food facts about the UK’s favourite pizza topping and about pizzas in general.
  • The largest pizza ever made used 6,193Kg of dough, 2,244Kg of sweet marinara sauce, 3,992Kg of cheese and around 630,496 slices of pepperoni.
  • Pizza Hut claim to have been the first to sell a pizza via the internet in 1994. The pizza was a large pepperoni and mushroom pizza with extra cheese.
  • Since opening the first Domino’s store in the UK in 1985, they now have over 1,200 stores across the UK and Republic of Ireland and more than 35,000 team members. Last year, they sold over 106 million freshly handcrafted pizzas.
  • The longest pizza delivery was from Cape Town in South Africa to Sydney in Australia.
  • Pizza Hut set a world record in 2016 when it made a pizza delivery to Mt. Kilimanjaro to celebrate the opening of its 100th store.
  • Italian immigrants in New York City created pepperoni in 1919.
  • In 2016 Domino’s delivered the world’s first-ever pizza by drone in New Zealand.
  • There’s a pizza museum in Philadelphia called Pizza Brain. It is home to the world’s largest collection of pizza memorabilia.
  • In 2013, Pizza Hut Canada released a limited-edition pizza-scented perfume giving 110 bottles away to fans on Facebook.
