Abstract
To celebrate World Pasta Day (25th October) we have found our favourite food facts related to this topic.
  • Passengers flying directly from Genoa can take one jar up to 500g (or two jars up to 250g) of pesto onto their plane, provided the jar has been scanned in a special X-ray machine.
  • Tempestine is the smallest pasta type, with each tiny piece weighing just 0.0057g and less than 2mm across.
  • It is estimated there are about 350 different types of pasta.
  • According to Guinness World Records, the fastest time to eat a bowl of pasta is 17.03 seconds, which was achieved by Leah Shutkever in London in August 2023.
  • In Italy, it is considered bad luck to cut spaghetti with a knife.
  • In 2012 Magillo Restaurant and Macro Supermarket joined forces to create the largest lasagne, which weighed 4,865 kg and measured 25m by 2.5m.
  • The Campbell Soup Company first introduced its tinned Alphabetti Spaghetti in 1934.
  • Based on data Italy produced around 22% of the world supply of pasta in 2015.
  • The three most popular pasta dishes are macaroni cheese, spaghetti bolognese and lasagne.
  • The top five pasta consuming countries per head of population include Tunisia, Venezuela, Greece and Russia, with Italy out front as the number one as they consume an estimated 23Kg a year.
