Abstract
To celebrate Veganuary we have found our favourite food facts related to this topic. Veganuary is the month-long pledge that encourages people around the world to adopt a vegan diet for January and beyond.
- In 2024 more than 2,100 new vegan products and menu options were launched around the world to celebrate Veganuary.
- A survey by Ipsos in 2018 estimated vegans make up 3% of the global population – over 230m people. The Guardian, though, has a more conservative estimate at 79m (1%).
- The word ‘vegan’ was coined in 1944 by Donald Watson, who founded the Vegan Society in the UK.
- Almond milk contains around 50% fewer calories than cow's milk, and it's also a good source of vitamin E.
- Celebrities supporting the 2025 Veganuary campaign include chefs Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Ainsley Harriott, Kwoklyn Wan as well as Hollywood actor Woody Harrelson.
- According to research approximately one in four Brits identify as flexitarians (those reducing animal product consumption) and over 600,000 people are estimated to be fully vegan.
- Dairy products are a good source of calcium, but good plant-based alternatives include dark leafy greens like kale, collard greens, and spinach, as well as broccoli, oranges, almonds.
- The Vegan Fest in Berlin is one of the largest vegan festivals in the world, attracting over 50,000 visitors each year who come to taste vegan food.
- Celebrities who are vegan include singers Beyonce and Ariana Grande, as well as actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Natalie Portman.
