A new week brings new Food Facts, and some very surprising ones too.
  • In the 17th century Catholics were condemned by some bishops for ‘cheating’ because they drank chocolate on fast days, such as during Lent. It created such a row that Pope Alexander VII was forced to intervene to say it was actually OK.
  • The first recorded mention of a cheesecake was it being served to athletes during the first Olympic games that were held in 776 BC.
  • Coffee is the most popular beverage worldwide with over 400 billion cups consumed every year.
  • The number of nutella jars sold worldwide in one year is enough to cover the Great Wall of China eight times.
  • Humans share more than 60% of their DNA with bananas and chickens.
  • Although tomatoes are botanically a fruit the US Supreme court ruled them as a vegetable in 1893 (Nix vs Hedden).
