Abstract
What a better way to say farewell to October than with a spooky edition of our food facts. What's your favourite?
- The pumpkin originated in in the Oaxaca Valley in southern Mexico about 9,000 years ago.
- The Irish and Scottish tradition used to mean that turnips were carved instead of punpkins, the orange vegetable became more popualar when immigrants brought the tradition to America and there were more pumpkins than turnips.
- According to folktales, certain regions in the Balkans believed that if pumpkins and watermelons were left out longer than ten days they would turn into vampires.
- A survey in the US estimated that the average child who goes trick-or-treating on Halloween consumes between 3,500 and 7,000 calories in sweets on the night – the equivalent of between 85 and 170 sugar cubes.
