Abstract
To celebrate the end of the week we have a selection of Fun Friday Food Facts for you to enjoy.
- In 2016, thieves stole £20,000 worth of Jammie Dodger biscuits from its factory in South Wales. After being sentenced to a total of more than 11 years, the five men shouted “Anyone want a biscuit?” as they were taken to the cells.
- Cassava, a starchy tuber, is widely grown and eaten in Africa but has to be carefully prepared to remove the cyanide in it to prevent eaters suffering a permanent paralysis called konzo.
- French fries are not from France. They were first made in Belgium in 1876. The word "French" describes the way the potato is cut before cooking.
- Rice has been cultivated for the past 10,000 years. It is a mainstay in 3.5 billion people’s diets (half of the world’s population).
- Livestock uses over 80% of farmland but produces just 18% of food calories and 37% of protein.
- Taste buds can be found on the tongue, but also on the inside of cheeks, on lips and on the roof of your mouth.
