Abstract
Yesterday was the second hottest day ever recorded in the UK (37.7C at Kew Gardens) but we have some cool food facts for you today.
- The most popular carrots used to be purple before the 17th century. Orange carrots are more resistant and better tasting than their purple cousins and that is why you rarely ever see a purple carrot.
- Every time you lick a stamp you consume 1/10 of a calorie.
- According to a study by the Economic Research Service 27% of all food produced in western nations is wasted. Yet 1.2 billion people are underfed (same number of people who are overweight).
- The inventor of the chocolate chip cookies was Ruth Graves Wakefield and she sold her recipe in return for a lifetime supply of chocolate.
- One cow can produce up to 144 glasses of milk each day.
- Once harvested, pineapples don't continue to ripen, so don't buy one and save it for a week, thinking it will get any sweeter.
