- Cheese is the most shoplifted food item in the world – 4% of the world’s production is stolen each year! A man even offered a £500 reward for his cheddar to be returned
- Up until 2011, any drink that contained less than 10% alcohol in Russia was considered a soft drink!
- We might like our coffee in the UK these days, but we come 45th in the world league table for consumption, lagging well behind the Scandinavians. The Finns come first, with Norway, Iceland, Denmark and Sweden all making the top 10
- Shredded wood pulp is added to packages of grated cheese because the cellulose in it repels moisture and so stops the pieces clumping together
- In the Middle Ages, black pepper was considered a luxury and was so expensive that people sometimes used it to pay rent
