In the week where there's been a lot of 'hoo-ha' over the Queen's views on the European Union, we found lots of great food facts.

Of the top 10 beers in the world based on market share, 4 are Chinese, 3 American, 2 from Brazil and one Dutch. Number one place is taken by Snow beer, yet hardly any of its 18bn pints a year are sold outside China.

In October 1995, the potato became the first vegetable to be grown in space. NASA and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, created the technology with the goal of feeding astronauts on long space voyages, and eventually, feeding future space colonies.

The first documented instance of gingerbread men was at the court of Queen Elizabeth I. She had them made to resemble visiting important guests and presented them as a gift.

In England during the Second World War food was rationed. Bananas were on of many foods to go, leading to a rise in popularity of the so-called ‘mock banana’. They were made from boiled turnips, sugar and banana flavouring and often served on a sandwich.

It takes about 50 glasses of water to grow the oranges to make one glass of orange juice
