Abstract
As Christmas draws ever closer, settle down with a mince pie and some mulled wine (it's never too early) and enjoy a very festive edition of Friday Food Facts.

Are you a picky eater or were you just born that way? Brussels sprouts are loved by some and loathed by many, but according to research you may be been born with a gene that puts you off the veg. Seven in ten of us have it, but our modern habits – alcohol and tobacco to be precise – have dulled our taste buds to a degree and mean that more of us can cope with the bitter taste of the 'green assassin'.

Last year, a team of scientists and local schoolchildren used the energy from 1,000 Brussels sprouts to light a Christmas tree on London's Southbank.

A new survey estimates the average Brit will eat nearly 6,000 calories over the course of Christmas Day – the equivalent of 12 Big Macs.

Emma Dalton, a self-confessed competitive eater, outdid herself this week, where she managed to eat 325 Brussels sprouts, weighing more than 3kg, in just 36 minutes.

Pigs in blankets are also known as devils on horseback, kilted sausages, and wiener winks.
