Supported by an Innovate UK Net Zero Grant this trial conducted across nine hospitals received ‘enthusiastic backing’ from hospital catering teams marking a ‘significant step’ toward sustainability in healthcare.
The initiative demonstrated the potential for substantial reductions in carbon emissions, operational costs and waste generation, all of which align with the NHS Green Plan’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions.
By swapping disposable containers for durable, reusable alternatives, the project has contributed to the NHS’s wider efforts to adopt more sustainable practices.
Lynn Johnson from FSG Returnables said: "We were delighted by the positive response from catering teams, who are eager to embrace environmentally friendly solutions. The pilot highlighted the clear benefits of reusable containers, but we also identified the challenge of preventing them from going missing.
“To address this, the next phase of the project will involve larger-scale trials, enhanced messaging, training for stakeholders, and the introduction of a digital tracking system to ensure containers are properly returned and not discarded or taken home."
This project is an important part of FSG Returnables’ ongoing commitment to reducing waste and carbon footprints while supporting organisations in their transition to a circular economy. It also sets a precedent for similar initiatives across other healthcare institutions looking to embrace sustainable solutions in their operations.
