cyber security food sector survey
Abstract
A survey of more than 2,000 staff members working across 16 different industries found that only 3% of the food and accommodation sector actively trained employees in cyber security.

This contrasts with the 96% of the utilities sector which provide cyber security training against a background of a 2.39m instances of cyber crime over the past year.

Venky Sundar, founder and president of Indusface, the company behind the survey, said that with staff training in cyber security being an essential part of employee onboarding, sufficient training is crucial if businesses wish to protect themselves against cyber attacks.

The survey found that food and accommodation businesses reported that the most common form of cyber attack was through email hacking, with 64% of respondents within the sector experiencing this.

Responses from the survey suggest that not only does cyber security training need to be increased, but it needs a focus on email hacking and phishing [fraudulent emails trying to persuade people to give up information such as passwords or account numbers] attacks.

Sundar added: “The cyber security of any business, whether an SME or a larger corporation, is vital to its integrity.

“With technology and the internet being an integral, useful part of how many businesses operate, it is important that every company understands the risks of it being inadequately protected.

“If cyber attacks occur, a business can suffer from lost business data, a degraded reputation, and potentially a large financial cost.”
