Abstract
Sustainable Food Places and Food for Life Scotland, two organsiations working to improve the sustainability of public food, are hosting an online event.

The online event, which is taking place from 9.30am-12.00pm on Wednesday 16 March 2022, will discuss the power of public food and its potential to drive positive change across public health and wellbeing, communities and local economies.

The Good Food Nation Bill is putting public food at the heart of its ambitions and there are increasing calls for public food to be considered for the value it brings to society rather than merely viewed as a cost.

Price, infrastructure, procurement regulations, and supply all remain perceived obstacles to sourcing more food from local and sustainable sources.

This event will bring together a range of diverse speakers to look holistically at public food procurement, examples of best practice and aspects of procurement which are at times overlooked, highlighting issues which are fundamental to the future of local government and communities.

Lucianne Wardle, supply chain officer at Food for Life Scotland, said: “Ensuring the public procurement of food maximises public benefit is one of the biggest issues facing councils today and will be an important issue for both elected members and council officers to grapple with in the next local government term.

“As we head towards the May elections we want to highlight, in a non-partisan way, the enormous opportunities that properly resourced public procurement of food can and does bring to Scotland in terms of our local economy, the environment and public health. This event will be an informative and hopefully inspiring discussion of an issue which must be at the heart of how we build a good food nation.”
